This session will examine the involuntary commitment process for individuals involved in the criminal legal system from the judicial perspective. Participants will gain an understanding of the legal standards, due process protections, decision-making factors, and the roles of the courts and other stakeholders throughout the commitment process. The presentation will address common misconceptions about competency and involuntary commitment, explore challenges within the legal framework, and discuss how judicial decisions balance individual rights, public safety, and access to treatment. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the legal considerations that shape outcomes at the front end of the involuntary commitment process.
